San Diego, Calif., March 21, 2012 -- When President Obama visited the Copper Mountain Solar 1 Facility in Nevada Wednesday, he got a first-hand look at the first large-scale solar facility equipped with solar forecasting devices called sky imagers.  The devices are powered by sophisticated algorithms, which were developed by researchers at the University of California San Diego. The technology was funded by Sanyo Electric Corp., now Panasonic, the Department of Energy, California Energy Commission and California Public Utilities Commission.

Farhat Beg, Professor in the Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Department has been named an IEEE Fellow. He is being recognized for contributions to “high intensity laser matter interactions and pulsed power pinches”. The IEEE Grade of Fellow is conferred by the IEEE Board of Directors upon a person with an outstanding record of accomplishments in any of the IEEE fields of interest.  The total number selected in any one year cannot exceed one-tenth of one- percent of the total voting membership.

Distinguished Professor Marc Meyers has been elected a Fellow of the American Physical Society,

"For being a leading member of the international community on the dynamic response of materials for over thirty years, publishing over 330 papers.  In addition to his fundamental contributions to the field, he has provided leadership through his activities in APS, MRS, and ARO, including co-founding the EXPLOMET conference."

Assistant professor Juan C. del Alamo received a prestigious CAREER Award in Fluid Dynamics from the National Science Foundation. The five year grant, entitled "Dynamics of anisotropic fluids: a frontier in intracellular microrheology" will support his group's research on the mechanical behavior of living soft matter.

Professor Frank E. Talke will be awarded the 2010 Tribology Gold Medal, "In recognition of his outstanding achievements in Tribology in particular for his meritorious work in the field of magnetic storage systems, ink jet technology and interferometric instrumentation."
