The renewables group in the Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering of UC San Diego covers a wide range of modern research topics that are relevant to renewable energy generation and integration. In the generation side, research areas include materials for nano-scale thermal transport, thermoelectric conversion, atomic-scale materials, ceramics, biomass, chemical kinetics in practical systems, clean combustion, fundamental combustion processes including droplet spray combustion, etc. In the power grid integration side, research topics include solar radiation, solar resourcing, solar forecasting, cloud transport, impact of meteorology and climate on solar integration, numerical weather prediction, smart energy systems, dynamics and control of battery and other energy storage systems, etc.
