JPF01926 Assistant Professor -Computational Mechanics

The Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering (MAE, http://maeweb.ucsd.edu/) at the University of California, San Diego) invites applications for an Assistant Professor (tenure-track) position from candidates in Mechanical Engineering with a strong focus on research in Computational Mechanics and associated applications. Research topics of interest include, but are not limited to: multi-physics, multi-scale computational mechanics of materials subject to extreme environments; modeling of heterogeneous, “soft” materials; and advanced numerical methods for computational mechanics. Applications to aerospace engineering, bioengineering, additive manufacturing and to other areas of expertise represented in the MAE department are of particular interest. The instructional responsibility includes teaching undergraduate mechanics courses and graduate courses on numerical methods, elasticity, plasticity, and dynamics.

The required job duties include developing an excellent research program, teaching of university students, and service activities. As such, successful faculty candidates will demonstrate potential for teaching excellence and the highest standards of scholarship and professional activity in their research area. In addition, preferred candidates will have demonstrated accomplishments in areas contributing to diversity, equity, and inclusion, and have a desire to participate in the School's diversity initiatives (http://www.jacobsschool.ucsd.edu/diversity/).

A Ph.D. degree (or advanced to candidacy) is required in Engineering or closely related discipline. JPF01909 Assistant Teaching Professor in Mechanical and/or Aerospace Engineering (Lecturer with Potential of Security of Employment)

The Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering (MAE, http://maeweb.ucsd.edu/) at the University of California, San Diego invites applications for an Assistant Teaching Professor (also termed Lecturer with Potential for Security of Employment). We are particularly interested in candidates with expertise and teaching experience in the core areas of mechanical and/or aerospace engineering, including laboratory and design courses. Generally, teaching professors are full-time employees who are expected to teach 2 courses per quarter. In addition to demonstrating excellence in teaching, individuals in this position are expected to engage in professional activities and service related to the pedagogical mission of the department and university.

LPSOE faculty are expected to do much more than excellent teaching. They have leadership responsibility, not only as teachers, but as facilitators and initiators of instructional development, curriculum design, course structure, teaching methods, new technologies, and coordinating a spectrum of teaching activities. They play a leadership role in teaching in the departments and their disciplines. Further, they provide university and public service in addition to educational leadership beyond the campus and contributions to instruction-related activities.

Candidates should demonstrate innovative teaching methodologies, potential to teach core and advanced lecture and/or laboratory courses in mechanical and/or aerospace engineering, and be highly motivated to improve the undergraduate student experience. The required job duties include teaching and mentoring of university students, curriculum development, accreditation, service activities, supervising undergraduate research, and mentoring undergraduate teams in their professional activities (e.g. Formula SAE, Design-Build-Fly and other student competitions).

A candidate for appointment, merit increase, or promotion in this series is judged by the following criteria:
• Teaching of truly exceptional quality that meets our long-term instructional needs
• Professional achievement and activity; an appointee in the L(P)SOE series is expected to maintain currency in the profession and pedagogy
• University and public service; Educational leadership in our programs and beyond the campus, plus substantial contributions to instruction-related, extra-curricular and outreach activities

Preferred candidates will have demonstrated accomplishments in areas contributing to diversity, equity, and inclusion, such as increasing the access and success of underrepresented students or faculty in engineering. The Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering (MAE, http://maeweb.ucsd.edu/) at the University of California, San Diego, invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor position from candidates in Aerospace Engineering with a strong focus on research in space-based science and technologies and associated applications. Research topics of interest include, but are not limited to, low-cost and/or reusable launch systems technologies; emerging spacecraft propulsion or thermal systems; novel sensor or control systems; small, micro and nanosatellites; spacecraft, vehicle and mission design; satellite constellation design and control; and life extension using new small attachable satellites to provide fresh power or upgraded electronics to existing satellites.
