The MAE department seeks candidates in the areas of biomechanics and mechanobiology, who are pursuing innovative interdisciplinary research in the application of fluid and/or solid mechanics to the solution of biological and biomedical problems. Systems of interest range from the cellular level to the tissue and organ levels, with a focus on mechanobiology including the mechanics of soft matter. We welcome applicants with expertise in experiments, computation, or theory. Successful candidates will be expected to work in an interdisciplinary environment in the department and across the university campus.

The MAE department seeks candidates in all areas of Aerospace Engineering, with preference for candidates with interests in space-based science and technologies and associated applications. Research areas of particular interest include low-cost and/or reusable launch systems technologies; emerging spacecraft propulsion or thermal systems; novel sensor or control systems; small, micro, and nanosatellites; spacecraft, vehicle and mission design; satellite constellation design and control; and life extension using new small attachable satellites to provide fresh power or upgraded electronics to existing satellites.

The MAE department seeks candidates in the area of Systems Engineering, including model-based systems engineering, full lifecycle simulation and modeling, verification and validation, uncertainty management, digital twining and digital threading, orchestration, data-driven control and design optimization, and machine learning & artificial intelligence in engineering design. We seek candidates whose systems engineering research is interdisciplinary and applicable to transportation systems, energy systems, manufacturing systems, biomedical systems, and other domains of science and technology.

The MAE department seeks candidates who are pursuing innovative interdisciplinary research in the technology and systems challenges of deep decarbonization of the energy system. Example areas include but are not limited to electric grid operation with high penetration levels of renewable energy and storage (stochastic optimal load flow and unit commitment, state estimation); engineering aspects of systems-level solutions such as forecasting, energy storage, and demand response (e.g. coordination of distributed energy resources, learning theory, data analytics); engineering strategies for flexible thermo-electric systems (e.g. power plant flexibility, long-duration thermal storage), development and deployment of carbon capture and sequestration or direct air capture of CO2.  We are particularly interested in candidates whose interests cover multiple technologies and their local or global impacts in connection to complex energy systems as opposed to candidates whose research is focused on energy policy.

The MAE department seeks candidates in the area of computational mechanics of materials. We seek candidates who are pursuing innovative interdisciplinary research focused on multiscale computational design of materials, which may involve, but is not limited to, topics such as functional materials and materials in extreme environments (e.g. severe temperature, strain rate, stress, chemical, or irradiative conditions). The use of approaches incorporating atomistic, kinetic, and continuum models complemented by data science or machine learning are also of interest.

 

Required job duties include developing a successful research program, teaching university students at the undergraduate and graduate levels, and excel in service activities. As such, successful faculty candidates will demonstrate potential for teaching excellence and the highest standards of scholarship and professional activity in their research areas. In addition, successful candidates must be committed to increasing diversity and inclusion and have a desire to participate in the School's diversity initiatives.

A Ph.D. degree in Engineering or in a related discipline is required at the time of application for all positions.

Generally, teaching professors are full-time employees who are expected to teach 2 courses per quarter. In addition to demonstrating excellence in teaching, individuals in this position are expected to engage in professional activities and service related to the pedagogical mission of the department and university.

A Ph.D. degree (or advanced to candidacy) is required in the area of Engineering or a related discipline at the time of application.

LPSOE faculty are expected to do much more than excellent teaching. They have leadership responsibility, not only as teachers, but as facilitators and initiators of instructional development, curriculum design, course structure, teaching methods, new technologies, and coordinating a spectrum of teaching activities. They play a leadership role in teaching in the departments and their disciplines. Further, they provide university and public service in addition to educational leadership beyond the campus and contributions to instruction-related activities.

Candidates should demonstrate innovative teaching methodologies, potential to teach core and advanced lecture and/or laboratory courses in mechanical and/or aerospace engineering, and be highly motivated to improve the undergraduate student experience. The required job duties include teaching and mentoring of university students, curriculum development, accreditation, service activities, supervising undergraduate research, and mentoring undergraduate teams in their professional activities (e.g. Formula SAE, Design-Build-Fly and other student competitions).

A candidate for appointment, merit increase, or promotion in this series is judged by the following criteria:

• Teaching of truly exceptional quality that meets our long-term instructional needs

• Professional achievement and activity; an appointee in the L(P)SOE series is expected to maintain currency in the profession and pedagogy

• University and public service; Educational leadership in our programs and beyond the campus, plus substantial contributions to instruction-related, extra-curricular and outreach activities

JPF02112 Temporary Lecturer- Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering

The UC San Diego Department of Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering is seeking one or more temporary lecturers to teach between one and three courses per quarter during the academic year. We seek applicants in all content areas and are particularly interested in applicants with the expertise to teach undergraduate and graduate courses in aerospace, controls, design, environmental, fluid mechanics, information storage, mechanics & materials, robotics, biomedical, biomaterial, medical devices, combustion, plasma and fusion, and renewables.
