We are deeply saddened to share that our colleague, Steve Roberts, passed away on Friday, June 27, 2025, after a brief illness. He was surrounded by family at the time.
Steve was a valued member of the Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering for 18 years, having joined the instructional lab staff in May of 2007. A scientist, engineer, and teacher at heart, Steve brought extraordinary depth and generosity to our community. He held a doctorate in micrometeorology and plant ecophysiology from Duke University and held several patents in sensor design. He helped countless engineering students improve and instrument their projects and played a key role in redesigning several undergraduate experiments to enhance learning and safety. He also frequently collaborated with faculty, lending his expertise to support research efforts across the department.
Outside of work, Steve lived life to the fullest. A Southern California native, he was an avid surfer and cyclist. He and his wife spent summers in Spain, where they found a second home and enjoyed time with their son. He played classical guitar, raced cars, and had a remarkable curiosity that shaped everything he did. While a quiet man, once you took the time to engage with him, he could expound at length about any number of topics and regale you with stories of an adventurous life well-lived.
Steve is survived by his wife, Edda; his son, Mark; and his granddaughter. His absence will be felt deeply across our community.
