From running a lab dedicated to advancing human potential with the help of technology to hosting a show about exploration on the National Geographic Channel, MAE alumnus Albert Yu-Min Lin is a multifaceted individual whose passions encompass exploration, science, technology, and storytelling. A three-time alumnus of UC San Diego, Lin earned a B.S. in mechanical engineering, followed by an M.S. and Ph.D. in materials science and engineering, laying a strong foundation for his future endeavors. Lin, inspired by Professor Marc A. Meyers—a materials scientist known for his wide-ranging interests beyond academia—embodies the fusion of engineering expertise and adventurous exploration. On April 11th, Lin will join the Department of MAE as a Keynote Speaker to share the department’s 60th anniversary.

Lin's insatiable curiosity and drive have led him to become an internationally recognized scientist and an award-winning National Geographic Explorer. Notably, he led the Valley of the Khans Project, utilizing satellites, drones, and ground-penetrating radar to locate Genghis Khan's tomb in Mongolia. His unique approach has been featured in various National Geographic series, including Lost Cities with Albert Lin, where he employs advanced technologies to uncover hidden historical sites. Beyond his exploratory work, Lin serves as the director of the Center for Human Frontiers at UC San Diego's Qualcomm Institute, focusing on enhancing human potential through technological innovation.

Committed to inspiring the next generation of explorers, Lin actively gives back to education. In 2010, he helped establish the NSF-funded Engineers for Exploration program at UC San Diego, which gives hundreds of engineering students the opportunity to participate in field expeditions around the world. Lin also co-founded the digital K-12 education platform Planet3 Inc. in 2015, securing $15 million to help bring the thrill of discovery into classrooms.

Reflecting on his time at UC San Diego, Lin acknowledges the profound impact of the university's culture of innovation on his career. He credits the inspiration and support he received during his studies as pivotal in shaping his approach to exploration and discovery. Lin's journey highlights how a strong education, paired with a relentless curiosity, can drive innovative breakthroughs that bridge the gap between technology and the humanities.
