Dr. Frank Talke, Distinguished Professor of MAE, has received the 2012 ASME/ISPS Distinguished Institution Award for his dedication to the information storage and processing Systems Division and for excellence in research and contributions to the data storage industry.

James Friend receives the Carl Hellmuth Hertz mid-career achievement award

James Friend received the Carl Hellmuth Hertz mid-career achievement award from the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers at its annual International Ultrasonics Symposium held in Taipei Taiwan 20-24 October 2015,

"For substantial contributions to understanding the interactions between acoustic waves and fluids and the myriad applications arising from these interactions", in recognition of his years of effort in this discipline that has led to its establishment as a major research activity across the world.

Coordinated Robotics Lab's MIP toy featured as cover story in Design World Magazine

"Biological Materials Science" is written by Po-Yu Chen and Professor Marc Meyers and is intended to be a text that will introduce the fertile field of Biology to Materials Science and Mechanical Engineering.

Professor Eric Lauga receives the MAE Best Teaching Award and is the 2012 recipient of the Faculty Mentorship Award

Dean Seible recently presented Eric Lauga with the Best MAE Teaching Award for 2011.

The Graduate Student Community Awards Selection Committee has also named Dr. Lauga a 2012 recipient of the Faculty Mentorship Award.

Former UCSD Coordinated Robotics Lab student wins BIG in DARPA Robotics Challenge

Professor Bewley's former student, Dr. Chris Schmidt Wetekam, the first PhD graduate of the UCSD Coordinated Robotics Lab, and now a member of the Florida Institute for Human and Machine Cognition (IHMC), was an integral member of the IHMC Atlas team that placed second at the DARPA Robotics Challenge in Pomona, winning $1M in prize money.  23 teams teams competed.  More info here:  http://www.ihmc.us

Dr. Chris McGuffey awarded Air Force Office of Scientific Research Young Investigator Program Grant

Dr. McGuffey's project, titled Dynamics of high-intensity laser-driven proton beam transport in solid density materials was among 42 nationwide selected for funding by the program. Dr. McGuffey is a member of High Energy Density Physics Group led by Professor Farhat Beg in the Jacobs School of Engineering. The project will investigate transport of proton beams produced by high intensity lasers.
