Nate Delson awarded the 2015 Engineering Design Graphics Division Chair's Award

The 2015 Engineering Design Graphics Division Chair's Award for Outstanding Technical Paper was awarded to Nate Delson and Lelli Van Den Einde for Tracking Student Engagement with a Touchscreen App for Spatial Visualization Training and Freehand Sketching


The Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Department's 2016 Outstanding Alumni Awards

The inaugural recipient of the MAE Distinguished Alumnus Award is Professor Carlos Fernandez-Pello (UC Berkeley) for contributions to advancing fire safety and combustion fundamentals. The inaugural recipients of the MAE Alumni Awards for Impact are Professor Mohammed Zikry (North Carolina State University) for contributions to computational mechanics and modeling and Dr. Bernhard Knigge for contributions to the increase in performance and storage density of hard disk drives. Awards will be presented at the MAE Alumni Awards Ceremony on Thursday, April 14, 2016.


Professor Beg & Charlie Jarrott publish an article in Nature Physics

Farhat Beg and his graduate student, Charlie Jarrott, who is currently a post doctoral fellow at LLNL, have successfully published an article in Nature Physics, "Visualizing fast electron energy transport into laser-compressed high-density fast-ignition targets".


Shengqiang Cai receives the NSF Early Career Award

Assistant Professor Shengqiang Cai receives the NSF Early Career Award for, "Experimental and Theoretical Studies of Mechanics Interacting with Electric/Optical Fields in Liquid Crystal Elastomers".


Sonia Martinez and Jorge Cortes receive an ARPA-E grant, "Distributed Grid Control of Flexible Loads and DERs for Optimized Provision of Synthetic Regulating Reserves"

A new project on the coordination of distributed energy resources that has MAE Prof. Sonia Martinez (as PI) and Prof. Jorge Cortes (as co-PI) has been selected for a competitive award of $2.34 million in funding from the U.S. Department of Energy’s Advanced Research Projects Agency-Energy (ARPA-E). Other team members include William Torre (CER, UC San Diego), Prof. Tajana Simunic-Rosing (CSE, UC San Diego), and Byron Washom (RMP, UC San Diego), Prof. Alejandro Dominguez (University of Illinois), and Prof. Peter Sauer (University of Illinois).

Drs. Richert and Han selected as inaugural recipients of the Robert E. Skelton Systems and Control Dissertation Award

Drs. Dean Richert (PhD ’14, advisor J. Cortes) and Seung Hak Han (PhD ’15, advisor William McEneaney) have been selected as the inaugural recipients of the Robert E. Skelton Systems and Control Dissertation Award, established by the Cymer Center for Control Systems and Dynamics. The dissertation award, to be given annually, is established to honor the research contributions of doctoral alumni in the Center and in recognition of Bob Skelton for his legacy as the founder of the dynamic systems and control group in UCSD’s Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering.
